Recently, I’ve come across quite a number of interestingly renovated and redesigned homes in Singapore and this is another fine example. Located on Alnwick Road and designed by Park + Associates, this 4,628 sq/ft home is located on a slightly odd shaped plot. The rectangular shape of this particular bungalow plot would have (if done by any average joe) ended up in a long-ish shaped bungalow in most cases. Here, the architects and designers at Park + Associates have created a home in a more linear shape to allow lighting and ventilation to reach right into the heart of the home and imbue it with the feeling of airiness and brightness of the home.
Long stretching hallways and plenty of full length fixed glass and sliding glass doors have been incorporated into the design of the home to eliminate the feeling of confined spaces if done in the traditional brick and windows. To tie these glass elements seamlessly into the overall facade of the home, the cube design facade was employed to give the feeling of inclusion of the full length glass sliding doors within the overall created facade of this marvelous home.
With all the full length glass used in building this home, one would think that privacy would be a cause for concern, however nifty use of blinds for windows, timber louvered sliding doors and curtains all help keep the privacy of the home intact for the owners. These features while allowing privacy also perform another more functional purpose which is to control the amount of harsh daylight coming into the home at any one point in time. Hell, after spending all that money renovating your home, no one would want to have to perpetually wear sunglasses while home especially during the mid-day hours when the sun is at its brightest and hottest.
But if ever the owners just feel like basking in the sun, cooling off is as easy as A-B-C and a jump into the swimming pool which runs the length of the left side of the home. The simple and modern design cues in this home shows that you do not need to have flashy decorative items in your home to give birth to a home that’s modern and stunning and married to proper lay-out planning it is easy to create a home that gives the feeling of spaciousness.
But of all the features and design cues of this home, one in particular caught my eye and that is the large unsupported overhang which acts as the car porch. This feature had to have to be planned into the overall design of the home from the very beginning especially if the construction was done with reinforced concrete. This is an excellent house, home and a wonderful work of architectural art and is some thing to inspire the rest of us to strive just a little harder when we undertake our own home renovation projects.Image source: Freshome.com
