Journeying to switch nirvana!

Any home owner that has undertaken a home renovation would know that our humble home switches and plug point seem like a negligible part of the home. How often do we forget that those lil white pieces of plastic, screwed into our walls can actually cost a tidy sum when done for the entire house. In the search of the available types of switches to consider, I took a drive down to an electrical store that has came highly recommended by members of the Lowyat.net forum.

A quick drive just before lunch took me to Sunyang Electric Trading Sdn Bhd, located in Taman Paramount in Petaling Jaya to see what they had to offer. Finding the shop was not too much trouble at all, it’s located facing the Giant Hypermarket (old Paramount Cinema for those that remember it) and directly behind the Paramount Post Office. Parking is not so much a problem in this area on a Saturday as you can park right in front of the row of shops or even at the Giant open-air parking.

Sunyang Electric is pretty nondescript against its setting of shops selling equipment and other machinery and materials and a quick step into their shop reminds me of any other electrical shop out there, i had to find out what was so special about this place. Right at the front section of the shop a Schneider Electric display stands showing off their latest range of swithes, wall socket (plug points), astro wall socket and even sockets for Cat 6 cables (yummy!).

Considering that i was in the market for switches, etc… i was definitely interested what product ranges were available. One thing i do know for sure is that i’m not interested whatsoever in the LED indicator type switches. I like my room nice and dark when i go to bed at night, so those were definitely out as I’ve read numerous complaints about how the light is too bright at night.

A sales guy was quick to assist and run me through the different product ranges and the first was the most basic yet nice looking product range called Vivace. Must admit that these switches look definitely a great deal better than the conventional switches that are installed in most houses. Stated by Schneider Electric as the “single most influential design movement of the modern age eloquently expressed”, it’s not difficult to fall in love with this range of switches and sockets. The design is slim and it has a relatively trim profile but what i like most is that the design looks clean and refined.

But what caught my eye next definitely blew me out of the water. They had a full-flat switch which i have never seen installed anywhere before. Heck, the Vivace design may be nice but other brands like Hager also have similarly styled products. The one click on and one click off is definitely unique and the flat design would help make any wall look smooth and neat. Named the ZENcelo range, these switches come in the normal plain-jane white and also in Silver Bronze, Silver White and Silver Satin colour combinations.

All thoughts in my mind about the earlier Vivace range that i was looking at fled my mind. But how much would these switches cost in comparison with the Vivace range? With all things interesting and that look nice, these baby’s come with a price tag. Check out the quick comparison of the listed prices of these 2 different ranges that I was quoted by Sunyang Electric:

The prices stated above are their listed prices and have not taken into account the discount generally given to their customers. However, just looking at the listed prices is good enough to give anyone a reason to pause. Lets take a scenario for an average house that needs 20 units 2-gang switches, 31 units wall sockets, 5 air conditioning switches and 1 Astro wall socket. The total cost would work out to something along the lines of the below table for an entire house.

Whoever thought that making your house look good doesn’t come with a hefty price tag should look again. The difference in price when compared by individual item looks just like a little bit more, but when you add it all up the difference shows. In the scenario above we haven’t even taken into consideration items like water heater switches, additional Astro wall socket, Cat 6 wall sockets and anything other thing that your home may require.

Its a definite dilemma that home owners experience, you want the best for your family and home but are constraint by a limited budget. The basic demand and supply theory that some of us learned in college rears its big fat fuckin’ ugly head yet again. While this is not the end of this journey and I’ve by no means concluded my research into this area. Join us again as we journey down that long hard bumpy road and most likely travel on the roads slightly less traveled in search of awesome looking switches and wall sockets with hopefully equally awesome prices.

To pay a visit to Sunyang Electrical, their address and contact details are listed as follows:

Address: No. 15, Jalan 20/16, Paramount Garden, 46300 Petaling Jaya

Phone No.: +603-7876 3459

Nope, can’t say that I have. Recommended to have a look?

Clipsal was bought by Schneider Electric in 2003, so you can’t find clipsal anymore. Bro does this outlet offer the best price? What is the discount like? 20% or 30%

Eubiq is not really practical, unless u talking about dry kitchen area, other than that not suitable. and its aint cheap

Hie vincent… so far i’ve gone through the forums and Sunyang has been highlighted as the cheapest. Even when my wireman asked me whether i wanted him to get the switches, etc… for me and i mentioned that i wanted to check them out first, he also mentioned that their prices are the cheapest he has heard of for Schneider. Apparently according to some forumers, this shop actually does a straight off 40% discount, which actually makes the switches more affordable. Am definitely planning to get my stuff from there.

With regards to Eubiq… their prices are expensive and i’m would only consider them for the dry kitchen which is the most sensible area in the house to use this. Need to find out more about their product first and will definitely share my thoughts with everyone.
